India Lags in Carbon Capture Despite Global Growth
There are many new projects around the world to capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2) to help fight climate change.
These projects are important to keep the Earth from getting too warm.
However, India is not doing much in this area.
The country needs to start these projects to store a lot of CO2 and help industries like cement, steel, and power.
India has the potential to be a leader in this field, but it needs better policies and more support for these projects.
Without action, India might miss out on important benefits and fall behind other countries.
Global CCS projects have tripled, with 77 commercial projects and 47 under construction.
India has no material CCS projects, with ONGC planning only a 0.5 mtpa project by 2030.
India needs to store 0.3-0.4 billion tonnes of CO2 annually for a just energy transition.
India has strong potential for CCS, with theoretical storage capacity of 400-600 gt.
Policy frameworks and cost management are crucial for the success of CCS projects in India.
