Israeli Court Pressure Pushes Arab Party Leader From Election

Sami Abu Shehadeh leads an Arab political party in Israel.

Election officials tried to stop him from running because of something he wrote about the October 7 attack.

Shehadeh said the sentence did not mean he supported the attack.

Israel’s Supreme Court told him that most judges would likely remove him from the race.

He then chose to withdraw.

The court allowed another Arab politician, Ofer Cassif, and four Arab-led parties to remain in the election.

Shehadeh and the legal group Adalah said Arab politicians were being treated more harshly than Jewish politicians.

Israel’s election is scheduled for October 27.
