Amit Shah: New criminal laws built on technology, timeline, trust

The government of India has new rules for how police and courts handle people who break the law.

These rules are called the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.

They replaced very old rules that were made when Britain ruled India.

Amit Shah, the minister in charge of home affairs, said the new rules are built on three big ideas: technology, timeline, and trust.

Technology means police and courts will use computers and modern tools more.

Timeline means cases should be investigated and decided within a set time.

Trust means people should believe the justice system is fair.

Mr. Shah spoke at a ceremony in Puducherry, a place in southern India.

There, the local police received the President's Colour, which is the highest honour a police force can get.

Puducherry is the 18th state or union territory in India to earn this honour, and its police force has fewer than 5,000 officers.
