Syria Revives Official Newspaper After Five Years
In Syria, a new official newspaper called Al Thawra Al Souriya has started printing for the first time in five years.
The last president, Bashar al-Assad, stopped printing newspapers because it was too expensive and hard to deliver them during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, wants this newspaper to talk about people's lives and hopes.
The information minister, Hamza Mustafa, said it should be a place for free discussion.
Under Assad, the government controlled what the media could say, but now, more outlets are allowed to operate freely.
Syria launched the first print issue of Al Thawra Al Souriya newspaper on December 1, 2025.
The newspaper replaces Al Thawra, an Assad-era state newspaper.
Information Minister Hamza Mustafa aims for the newspaper to reflect people's lives and hopes in a space of free discussion.
Under Assad, media freedoms were heavily restricted with strong security control over content.
Syria's new authorities have allowed more outlets, including private publications, to operate freely.
