Punjab High Court Questions Poll Panel Over Audio Clip Probe
The Punjab and Haryana High Court is questioning the Punjab State Election Commission and the state police about a slow investigation into a controversial audio clip that some people say is trying to influence upcoming local elections.
The court is concerned about the fairness of the elections and wants to make sure the audio clip is real.
The Opposition parties, SAD and BJP, accuse the ruling AAP government of misusing the police.
They say the audio clip proves that the police were trying to stop opposition candidates from filing nomination papers.
The court wants the commission to take action once the forensic report is ready and to make sure the right people are in charge of the elections.
The petitioners want certain police officers named in the clip to not be involved in the elections until the investigation is over.
The court says that if there are any problems, people can still challenge the results after the elections.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court questioned the Punjab State Election Commission and the state police over the slow pace of the probe into a controversial audio clip.
The court noted that the authenticity of the clip is central to the allegations and that the commission must be ready with corrective measures.
The police issued notices to six people, including Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, to produce the original device containing the audio clip.
The petitioners argued that without securing the original devices, the investigation is inadequate and urged the court to send the clip to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL).
The Opposition parties, SAD and BJP, accused the AAP government of politicizing the police and misusing their power to influence the elections.
