RBI's Bank Group Norms Balance Stability and Flexibility
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released new rules for banks and their related companies.
These rules allow banks to continue lending in overlapping areas, but with some limits.
The RBI wanted to make sure all parts of a bank group follow the same rules to prevent any unfair advantages.
Earlier, there was a proposal that would have forced 12 big bank groups to change their lending businesses, but the final rules are more flexible.
Banks can still use their strengths to serve different customers.
There are also new limits on how much banks can own in companies that help with bad loans.
Overall, the new rules aim to keep the banking system stable while giving banks the freedom to operate effectively.
RBI's final guidelines allow overlapping lending activities within bank groups, subject to board approval.
12 bank groups, accounting for 55% of sectoral advances, were initially at risk of restructuring under draft guidelines.
Banks must divest excess stakes in asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) by March 2028 if they exceed the 20% limit.
Restrictions on specific loan segments for bank group entities have been applied to align risks and curb regulatory arbitrage.
The guidelines aim to eliminate regulatory arbitrage and provide flexibility in business conduct while maintaining structural strengthening.
