Immigrant Founders Drive America’s Unicorn Economy Amid Tightening Immigration Rules

Many of America’s biggest private startups were started by immigrants or their children.

A research group found that immigrants founded or cofounded 59% of U.S. unicorn companies.

A unicorn is a private startup worth at least $1 billion.

Six of 15 people who founded multiple unicorns were born in India.

International students also founded nearly one in four U.S. billion-dollar startups.

The combined value of immigrant-founded unicorns grew to about $5 trillion.

At the same time, the Trump administration is making rules for skilled workers and international students stricter.

The debate is whether these rules will protect U.S. interests or cause talented people to build companies elsewhere.
