Urban Planners Criticize New CURE Bill Draft
Urban planners in Hyderabad have pointed out some big problems with a new law called the Core Urban Region (Integrated Governance) Bill of 2026.
This law is supposed to replace an old one and make the city better by improving how it's run, how services are provided, and how it deals with climate change and other important issues.
The planners say the new law is not good enough because it doesn't clearly say who is responsible for what, and it doesn't have enough people or money to make things work well.
They also say the law needs to give more power to elected leaders and set deadlines for important changes.
The government is asking people to give their opinions on the law before July 24.
Urban planners criticize the draft CURE Bill for not creating an effective governance structure.
The Bill scores 28% in assessment, higher than the current GHMC Act but lower than the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act.
Key reforms recommended include clearer planning responsibilities, greater accountability, adequate staffing and funding, stronger powers for elected representatives, and mandatory implementation timelines.
The Bill introduces measures related to metropolitan governance, service delivery, climate resilience, gender inclusion, and livelihoods.
Citizens are encouraged to participate in shaping the legislation before the consultation deadline of July 24.
