Calcutta University Teachers Oppose Governor's Great Calcutta Massacre Lecture

A big university in India called Calcutta University wanted to invite the governor, Mr. R.N. Ravi, to give a talk about something that happened long ago called the Great Calcutta Massacre.

That was a sad time when people from different religions fought each other in the city.

Some teachers at the university were not happy about this talk.

They said the talk could make people angry at each other again, which is called spreading 'communal hatred.'

The teachers' group is called the Calcutta University Teachers' Association, and their leader is Mr. Sagarmoy Ghosh.

He said the university should be a place where everyone feels welcome, no matter their religion.

The university sent out a notice about the talk that said the violence was started by the Muslim League government of Bengal.

The teachers thought the notice itself was unfair and political.

But the registrar, Mr. Debasis Das, who wrote the notice, said there was nothing wrong with it.

So the two sides disagree about whether the talk should happen.
