Air India Expands Fleet with Dreamliners
Air India is getting more Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner planes to improve its long flights.
The first new Dreamliner, made just for Air India, will start flying from Mumbai to Frankfurt on February 1.
The airline's boss, Campbell Wilson, said they will get more planes this year and even more in 2027 and 2028.
They already have orders for 570 planes, but only 27 have been delivered so far.
The new planes have special features like mood lighting that helps passengers feel better on long flights.
Some parts of the plane still need approval from the US government.
Air India is also upgrading its older planes, and all of them should be updated by mid-2027.
The airline showed off one of these new planes at an event called Wings India 2026 in Hyderabad.
This event is about India's aviation sector and includes talks, exhibitions, and shows.
Boeing also said that airlines in India and South Asia will need 3,290 new planes in the next 20 years because more people are flying.
Air India is expanding its long-haul fleet with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with the first custom-built plane starting service on the Mumbai–Frankfurt route on February 1, 2024.
The airline plans to introduce at least 20 widebody aircraft in 2026 and significant expansions in 2027 and 2028 as part of its Vihaan.AI transformation program.
Air India has orders for 570 aircraft, with 27 already delivered, and is upgrading its legacy fleet with retrofitted 787-8s.
The new Dreamliners feature upgraded interiors and mood lighting inspired by Indian wellness concepts, with some features pending US FAA approval.
Air India showcased its new Dreamliner at Wings India 2026 in Hyderabad, an event focusing on India's aviation sector growth and innovation.
