Madhya Pradesh Tables Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026
The Madhya Pradesh government has introduced a new law called the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026.
This law aims to give everyone equal rights and justice.
It says that people can only have one spouse, and marriages and live-in relationships must be registered.
The law also protects women who are abandoned in live-in relationships and gives children born out of such relationships the right to inherit property.
Some groups, like certain tribes, are not included in this law.
The government says this law will not interfere with people's religious freedoms.
Some people support the law because it promotes equality, while others are worried it might restrict cultural practices.
The Madhya Pradesh government tabled the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026 in the state Assembly.
The Bill mandates monogamy, criminalizes Nikah Halala, and requires registration of marriages and live-in relationships.
Scheduled tribes and nomadic/semi-nomadic communities with protected customary traditions are exempt from the Bill.
The Bill provides equal inheritance rights and legal recognition for children born out of live-in relationships.
The government asserts that the Bill does not interfere with religious freedoms and traditions.
