India's Water Security Initiative Prioritizes Conservation
The Indian government is starting a new program to protect water.
Ministers launched a plan to make sure money from a jobs program called MGNREGA goes towards saving water.
This means more money will be used for things like building ways to catch rainwater or improving water storage.
The goal is to stop water levels from going down too much.
The government is doing this because they know water is very important for life and they want to make sure there is enough for everyone.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chandrakant Patil launched the National Initiative on Water Security.
The initiative prioritizes water conservation under MGNREGA.
Amendments were made to the MGNREGA Act to focus on water-related works.
Groundwater depletion is a key concern.
The initiative shifts from reactive to preventive water management.
