FBI Eases Automatic Hiring Ban Over Past Prostitution Encounters

FBI Eases Automatic Hiring Ban Over Past Prostitution Encounters

The FBI changed how it reviews some job applicants’ past encounters with prostitutes.

Before, such an encounter could automatically end an application.

Now, officials may look at what happened and when it happened.

People can still be rejected for conduct in the last 10 years or for repeated conduct.

Conduct while someone held a trusted public-safety job can also lead to rejection.

The FBI says criminal sexual acts are still not acceptable for its employees.

Applicants continue to undergo background checks, interviews, credit checks, and lie-detector tests.

Some former agents worry the change lowers standards during a difficult hiring period.

Others say reviewing each person’s circumstances can prevent unfair decisions about old conduct.
