2027 Census to Geo-Tag All Buildings, First of Its Kind
The Indian government is planning to digitally map every building in the country for the 2027 census.
This means they will record the exact location of each house and building.
Enumerators will use special maps to mark these locations.
This will help the government count how many houses and people there are more accurately.
This is the first time they are doing this; previously, they used hand-drawn maps.
They'll collect the data using mobile apps and self-enumeration.
They will also gather information about housing conditions and household amenities.
The 2027 Census will include geo-tagging of all buildings for the first time.
Digital Layout Mapping (DLM) will be used to assign unique coordinates to each building.
Houselisting will occur from April to September 2026, population enumeration from February 2027.
Data will be collected through mobile applications, with self-enumeration an option.
Over 33 crore houses are targeted for geo-tagging during the census.
