Inside Australia's Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary's Conservation Mission
Koalas are endangered because many of their forests are being destroyed.
Land is cleared for farms, houses, and other development.
Bushfires can also burn the forests where koalas live.
A disease called chlamydia affects many wild koalas.
In 2022, koalas were listed as endangered in several Australian regions.
Around the world, the International Union for Conservation of Nature calls koalas vulnerable.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary helps care for these animals.
The sanctuary has been doing this for almost 100 years.
Koalas face habitat loss from deforestation, land clearing, housing development, and farming.
More frequent bushfires have destroyed large areas of forest and koala habitat.
Chlamydia is identified as a significant disease affecting wild koala populations.
Koalas were classified as endangered in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory in February 2022.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary has cared for koalas for nearly a century and is described as the world's oldest and largest koala refuge.
