Ex-Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg Challenges India’s GDP Numbers

Ex-Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg Challenges India’s GDP Numbers

India said its economy grew by 7.8% between April and June.

Subhash Chandra Garg, a former senior government official, disagreed with this number.

He said growth including inflation should have been 2.6%, with actual growth close to zero.

His criticism was shared by Opposition politicians, political parties and some economists.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation responded with six points defending the official calculation.

Garg was once India’s Finance Secretary and had earlier worked as Economic Affairs Secretary.

During his government career, he had disagreements with the Reserve Bank of India and other officials.

He later wrote books describing his experiences and disputes inside the Finance Ministry.
