WHO Says Siberia Plague Risk Is Low After Lab Worker’s Death

A laboratory worker in Siberia died after becoming very sick with pneumonia.

Officials said she did not test positive for plague, and they do not yet know what caused her illness.

Some people who may have been near her were asked to stay apart while health workers checked for infection.

About 60 workers at the institute were among those confined, and reports said around 200 contacts were monitored.

No plague cases have been confirmed in the area or among her contacts, according to the WHO.

The WHO says the risk is higher in Irkutsk than in other places, but remains low overall.

It is watching the situation and has asked for more information.
