ITR Filing Deadline 31 July 2026: Final Countdown
Taxpayers in India have to file their income tax returns by the end of July 2026.
Only people who earn more than the basic tax exemption, like salaried workers, pensioners, and certain business owners, need to file by that date.
Those who run small businesses or professionals use a different form and have a later deadline in August or October.
The government upgraded the online portal so it can handle a huge number of returns, so it is unlikely they will give more time.
If you need help, you can use the official website or a paid service to file your return.
ITR‑1 and ITR‑2 must be filed by 31 July 2026.
Eligible taxpayers include salaried employees, pensioners, HUFs, and non‑audit cases with income above the basic exemption.
Business owners filing ITR‑3 or ITR‑4 have deadlines of 31 August 2026 (no audit) or 31 October 2026 (audit required).
The e‑filing portal was upgraded to process up to 1 crore returns per day, reducing the chance of a deadline extension.
Taxpayers can file online using their PAN and password on the income tax department’s portal.
