SC Issues Contempt Notices to Speaker
The Supreme Court of India has once again issued contempt notices to the Assembly Speaker.
This is because the Speaker has not yet decided on some important petitions about certain lawmakers who changed their political parties.
The court had already warned the Speaker about this in November last year.
The latest notice comes from a petition by a leader from the BJP party, who says the Speaker's delay is causing problems and disrespecting the court's authority.
The issue is quite sensitive politically.
The BJP argues that the Speaker is violating the Constitution by withholding a decision out of fear of the government, while the Speaker maintains that he is following due process.
The case is expected to intensify political tensions in Telangana.
The Supreme Court issued fresh contempt notices to the Assembly Speaker for not deciding disqualification petitions of defected MLAs.
The notices were issued in a petition by BJP leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy.
The court had previously issued a contempt notice in November for similar reasons.
The Speaker's inaction is alleged to have undermined judicial authority and delayed resolution of a politically sensitive issue.
The case is related to the non-compliance with the court's earlier directions on disqualification petitions.
