Judge Blocks Pentagon Retaliation Against Anthropic Over AI Limits

Judge Blocks Pentagon Retaliation Against Anthropic Over AI Limits

Anthropic makes an artificial intelligence system called Claude.

The company said the system should not be used to watch Americans or control fully autonomous weapons.

The military responded by labeling Anthropic a security risk for government supply chains.

A judge in San Francisco said the government used that label to punish Anthropic for disagreeing with it.

The judge said national security cannot be used as an excuse to retaliate against critics.

However, another court in Washington, D.C., had earlier refused to temporarily protect Anthropic.

That means courts have not yet treated every part of the dispute the same way.

The government can appeal the newer ruling.

The case could influence whether other AI companies enforce their own rules when working with the military.
