MBDA Unveils Interceptor for Mass Drone Attacks
MBDA, a European missile company, is showing off a new weapon called the Counter Mass Interceptor.
This weapon is designed to protect against attacks by many cheap drones and other low-cost weapons.
Right now, European countries have to use weapons from the U.S., Israel, and other places to defend against these attacks.
The new interceptor will first target smaller drones and later be upgraded to handle bigger threats like rockets and missiles.
It will be ready by 2028 and could be made by MBDA or its partners.
The goal is to make it quickly and in large numbers, similar to how cars are made.
MBDA is unveiling the Counter Mass Interceptor at the Farnborough Airshow to counter mass drone attacks.
The interceptor aims to reduce Europe's reliance on non-European defense systems like those from the U.S. and Israel.
Initial version targets smaller drones, with a future version targeting a wider array of threats including rockets and missiles.
Development is led by British teams initially, with future iterations likely led by French teams.
The interceptor is expected to be available by 2028 and could be manufactured by MBDA or its industrial partners.
