India's Education Ministry Drafts Bill to Replace Existing Regulatory Bodies
The government is planning to create a new group called the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) to oversee all colleges and universities.
Right now, different groups handle different types of education, but the new plan is to put them all under one umbrella.
This new group, as suggested in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, will make sure schools are doing a good job, give them money, and set the rules for how they should teach.
This is similar to an earlier idea from 2018, and it aims to modernize how education is managed in India.
Education Ministry is drafting legislation to create the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI).
HECI aims to be a unified regulatory body for higher education, as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The HECI will have separate verticals for regulation, accreditation, funding, and academic standards.
HECI is intended to replace the UGC, AICTE, and NCTE.
The idea of a unified regulator was first proposed in a 2018 draft bill and reinforced by NEP 2020.
