ISI Council Members Sought for Input on Bill
The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a place where important decisions are usually made by a group called the ISI Governing Council.
Now, the government wants to change this by creating a new group called the Board of Governors, where most members will be chosen by the central government.
The ministry in charge has asked all members of the current council to share their thoughts on this change.
This comes after teachers and students protested because they think the new plan might give too much power to the government and take away the say of the teachers.
The ministry had earlier said they didn't need to talk to the council, but after the protests, they changed their mind and are now asking for the council's input.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has sought comments from ISI Governing Council members on the ISI Bill, 2025.
The bill proposes replacing the current society-based governance structure with a statutory framework headed by a board of governors.
The majority of the board members would be nominated by the Centre, raising concerns about centralization of power.
Teachers and students have protested against the bill, arguing it undermines faculty-led decision-making.
The ministry initially rejected the idea of consulting the council but reversed its decision after sustained protests.
