Officials Move to Cut Hyderabad ORR Speed Limit to 100 kmph
Officials are considering lowering the speed limit on Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road.
The proposed limit is 100 kmph instead of 120 kmph.
The police commissioner asked the Transport Commissioner to support the change.
The Transport Commissioner then asked the road agency to review the limit.
The road had 1,402 accidents in 2023 and 1,592 in 2024.
Officials say they need a careful study to know whether the faster limit caused more crashes.
They also say speeding, unsafe overtaking and some other driving practices create danger.
There are now only seven or eight patrol vehicles, though a committee says at least 30 are needed.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar urged the Transport Commissioner to reduce the ORR speed limit from 120 kmph to 100 kmph.
On October 9, Transport Commissioner K Ilambarthi asked Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited to review the limit for passenger safety.
The ORR recorded 1,402 accidents in 2023 and 1,592 in 2024, after the limit rose to 120 kmph in July 2023.
Officials say a scientific analysis is needed to determine how much speed-limit changes contributed to the accident increase.
Officials also identified speeding, zigzag overtaking, water tankers stopping near dividers and unauthorised two-wheelers as safety risks; patrol numbers have fallen from 19 to seven or eight.
