Budget to Support Solar Manufacturing
The Indian government is planning to support the local production of solar ingots and wafers with ₹5,000–6,000 crore in the upcoming budget.
These parts are important for making solar cells and modules.
Right now, India mostly imports these parts, but the government wants to make more of them locally.
This will help India become less dependent on other countries and make the solar energy supply chain stronger.
Over the past decade, India has increased its ability to make solar cells and modules a lot.
The government hopes this new support will help fill the gap in making the parts needed for these solar products.
The PLI scheme has helped some sectors like electronics and solar PV grow a lot, but other sectors have not done as well.
The Union Budget may provide ₹5,000–6,000 crore to support domestic manufacturing of solar ingots and wafers.
The focus is on strengthening India's upstream solar supply chain and reducing import dependence.
India has expanded its solar manufacturing capacity significantly, with solar cell capacity increasing from 1.2 GW in 2014 to 27 GW in 2025.
The government aims to address the gap in upstream manufacturing through targeted incentives or a separate PLI-type intervention.
India added 35 GW of solar generation capacity in 2025 and is working towards a target of 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2030.
