Bengaluru Boosts Low-Value Plastic Segregation
Bengaluru is doing a better job at separating low-value plastic from other trash.
They started on October 20 and now separate 380 metric tonnes every day.
Before, this plastic was sent to a waste-to-energy plant, but now a cement company called Dalmia Cement is taking it to use in their factory.
This helps reduce the amount of trash going to landfills.
The city produces 6,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, and about 45% of it is dry waste.
The goal is to separate 1,000 metric tonnes of low-value plastic each day, which will make Bengaluru cleaner and help the environment.
BSWML has scaled up low-value plastic (LVP) segregation to 380 metric tonnes daily, starting October 20.
Dalmia Cement Industries is now taking LVP from Bengaluru, providing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) credits in return.
This initiative has reduced the number of compactors carrying LVP to landfills from 400 to 300.
Bengaluru generates 6,000 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, with 45% being dry waste.
BSWML aims to increase LVP segregation to 1,000 metric tonnes daily, with cement manufacturers ready to handle up to 2,000 metric tonnes per day.
