Taiwan Insurers’ FX Losses Double on US Dollar Slump
Imagine Taiwanese life insurance companies have money invested in other countries, like the U.S. When the U.S. dollar goes down compared to Taiwan's money, it makes their investments look like they're worth less.
This has happened a lot recently, causing these companies to lose a lot of money.
Because the value of Taiwan's money has gone up, it makes the U.S. dollar investments less valuable.
This means their profits are down.
The government is letting these companies use different ways to calculate their losses to help.
Taiwanese life insurers' FX losses more than doubled from January to May.
Losses reached NT$263.8 billion due to the US dollar's decline.
May's NT$145.5 billion loss was the worst since 2018.
The Taiwan dollar's 12% gain reduced the value of foreign holdings.
Pretax profit swung to a loss of NT$61.7 billion in the first five months.
