India's Draft Steel Policy Targets 604 Million Tonnes by 2047
India has released a draft plan for its steel industry.
It wants the country to be able to make 604 million tonnes of crude steel each year by 2047, compared with about 220 million tonnes of capacity now.
The plan expects people and businesses to need more steel, with demand reaching 505 million tonnes.
It also aims to increase exports and help smaller steel producers.
India wants to rely less on imported coking coal by finding more supplies and using coal more efficiently.
The plan also supports making more specialty steel and improving product quality.
Steelmaking creates carbon pollution, so the draft suggests using energy more efficiently, renewable electricity, scrap and hydrogen.
It sets an emissions-intensity target for 2047 and describes a phased path toward net zero by 2070.
The draft National Steel Policy 2047 targets crude steel capacity of 604 million tonnes by 2047, up from about 220 million tonnes currently.
It projects finished steel demand of 505 million tonnes, per-capita consumption of 302 kilograms and steel exports of 45 million tonnes by 2047.
The policy proposes reducing reliance on imported coking coal, which meets nearly 92% of India's requirement, through domestic mining, washeries, supply deals and AI-supported blending.
Plans include support for the secondary steel sector, specialty steel, domestic technology, improved quality standards and stronger raw-material supplies.
The roadmap targets emissions intensity of 1.54 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of crude steel by 2047 and a phased transition to net zero by 2070.
