Court Blocks Trump Student Visa Crackdown Over Political Speech

A federal judge said the government cannot deport or cancel the visas of international students just because of their political opinions.

The case involved students who criticized Israel or supported pro-Palestinian causes.

The judge said using speech as the reason for visa punishment can violate free-speech protections.

Another judge had reached a similar conclusion in a separate case.

The Trump administration is also changing other student-visa rules.

Starting September 15, 2026, many students will generally receive permission to stay for four years instead of for the duration of their studies.

Students who need more time will have to request an extension.

Universities and business groups worry that these changes will discourage students from studying in the United States.
