Justice Surya Kant to Succeed Gavai as Next Chief Justice
Justice Surya Kant is set to become the next top judge in India.
He will take over on November 23, 2025, from the current Chief Justice, B. R. Gavai.
He is from Haryana and studied law at Maharishi Dayanand University.
Justice Kant has served as a judge in various courts, including the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and the Himachal Pradesh High Court, before joining the Supreme Court.
His legal career started in Hisar, and he later practiced law in Chandigarh.
He will serve as CJI until February 9, 2027.
