Germany Grants Record Citizenship in 2024, Led by Syrians
Germany gave citizenship to a record number of people in 2024!
That's when a lot of people become official German citizens.
A big part of this were Syrians, many who came to Germany a while back.
The government made it easier to become a citizen by lowering the time people have to live in Germany to get citizenship.
Before, you needed to live there for eight years, but now it can be as short as three or five years.
But some people don't like the change and want to make it harder to become a citizen again.
They think people should have to wait longer to prove they are ready to be citizens.
Germany granted citizenship to a record 291,955 people in 2024.
Syrians made up the largest group, accounting for 28% of naturalizations.
The number of Russian citizenships increased significantly.
New citizenship laws reduced the residency requirement for naturalization.
Some in the government are seeking to roll back these measures.
