Pune Meeting Debates Hindi Introduction in Schools: Class 6 Preferred
Imagine kids in school learning different languages.
The government in Maharashtra wanted to make Hindi a required subject for all young students starting from the very first grade.
But many teachers and smart people who study education said, 'Whoa, that might be too much for little kids!'
They think it's better to wait until kids are a bit older, maybe around the sixth grade, to start learning Hindi.
Some even said it's okay to learn to chat in Hindi a little earlier, like in third grade, but learning it formally should wait.
People gathered in a meeting to share their ideas.
Most agreed that starting Hindi in sixth grade is a good idea, while a few had different thoughts about when and how it should be taught.
A public consultation meeting was held in Pune by Maharashtra's three-language formula committee to discuss the introduction of Hindi.
Most participants favored introducing Hindi as a third language from Class 6, rather than the government's previously proposed Class 1.
Educationists and teachers raised concerns about the workload on students with an early introduction of Hindi.
Some attendees suggested conversational Hindi could be introduced earlier, while others proposed different timelines or optional languages.
The committee, led by Narendra Jadhav, will submit a report based on the feedback received.

Proponents of earlier introduction suggest conversational Hindi from Class 3, while others argue for a survey to assess the impact of early English language learning before deciding on Hindi. Some advocate for a Marathi or mother tongue focus first, then English in Class 3, and Hindi from Class 6.
