Budget 2026: Railways Allocation and Presentation Details
The Indian government is planning to give the railways a lot of money, around Rs 2.7 trillion, for the next financial year (FY27).
This is a small increase from the previous year's budget.
The railways need this money to make tracks, buy better equipment, and keep trains safe.
They have already spent most of the money given for this year, focusing on safety and making trains run better.
The government wants to keep investing in the railways to make them faster and more reliable.
Additionally, there are discussions about bringing back discounts for senior citizens who travel by train, which were stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This would help older people travel more affordably.
The railway budget is now part of the bigger government budget, which makes planning easier.
The Union Budget will be presented on February 1, 2026, by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, marking her ninth consecutive Budget speech.
The Budget Session of Parliament will run from January 28 to April 2, 2026.
Indian Railways to receive Rs 2.7 trillion to Rs 2.75 trillion for FY27, a 2-4% increase from FY26's Rs 2.65 trillion.
Minimum annual capital expenditure requirement set at Rs 2.5 trillion, with government support ensuring consistent investment.
Focus areas include safety measures, capacity enhancement, infrastructure modernisation, and passenger amenities.
As of December 2025, 80.54% of FY26's capex (Rs 2.03 trillion) has been utilised, a 6.54% increase compared to the same period last year.
Priority projects include track doubling, new routes, gauge conversion, dedicated freight corridors, and deployment of Kavach 4.0 and advanced signalling.

Senior Citizen Concession
Senior Citizen Concession Restoration
The government is considering restoring the senior citizen concession on Indian Railways, which was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. This would provide financial relief and improved mobility for elderly travelers.
Budget Merger
Some argue that restoring the concession could put financial pressure on Indian Railways, which already faces significant operational costs.
Budget Merger
Senior Citizen Concession Restoration
Merging the Railway Budget with the Union Budget simplifies financial planning and provides a comprehensive view of government finances, improving coordination across different transport sectors.
Budget Merger
Critics suggest that the merger reduces the focus on railway-specific needs and may lead to less targeted investment in the railway sector.
