Frequent Night-time Urination May Not Signal Prostate Cancer
Waking up often to urinate is called nocturia.
It can happen for many reasons.
Prostate cancer is one possible cause, but it is not the most common one.
Early prostate cancer may not cause any noticeable symptoms.
This is because the tumor may start in an area that does not press on the urine passage.
A person can have serious prostate cancer without urinary problems.
Another person can have very strong urinary symptoms caused only by a noncancerous enlarged prostate.
Therefore, how troublesome the symptoms feel does not always show how serious the cause is.
Nocturia, or frequent night-time urination, is a symptom rather than a diagnosis.
Prostate cancer can cause nocturia, but it is not the most common explanation.
Early-stage prostate cancer often causes no symptoms because tumors may not press on the urethra.
Severe urinary symptoms may result from benign prostate enlargement rather than cancer.
The severity of urinary symptoms does not necessarily indicate how serious the underlying condition is.
