CJP Founder Detained as Grandmother Dies in Maharashtra
Savitribai Dipke, who was 85, died at her home in a village in Maharashtra on Saturday.
Her grandson Abhijeet Dipke was detained by Delhi Police after his plane landed in Delhi.
He was travelling with two other Cockroach Janta Party members to attend a planned protest.
The party wanted to raise concerns about voter lists and voter registration forms.
The police had refused permission for the protest, citing safety and traffic concerns.
Reports disagreed about whether Abhijeet had been told that his grandmother died.
The CJP said his family and lawyers could not contact him and called for his release.
His parents travelled to the village, where the family planned her last rites for Sunday morning.
Savitribai Shankar Dipke, 85, died Saturday morning in Santuk Pimpri, Hingoli district; reports differ on how long she had been ill.
Abhijeet Dipke and CJP activists Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai for a planned Jantar Mantar protest.
The CJP planned to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, citing alleged electoral-roll irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision and changes to Form 6.
Reports conflicted over whether Dipke had been told of the death: police sources reportedly said he had, while the CJP and family said they could not reach him or establish his whereabouts.
The CJP demanded Dipke’s immediate release and communication with his family and lawyers; Delhi Police had refused permission for the protest, citing public safety, traffic and law-and-order concerns.
