17 Punjab districts see primary enrolment dip
In Punjab, 17 out of 23 districts have seen fewer children enrolling in primary classes in government schools this year compared to last year.
The government is trying to find out why this is happening.
They have asked the officials in charge of education in these districts to list the names of teachers in the schools where the biggest drops in enrolment have occurred.
This is because the government wants to understand if the teachers are doing their best to attract and keep students.
Six districts, however, have seen an increase in enrolment and were praised for their efforts.
The government is also looking into whether the drop in numbers is because they have started removing the names of students who never attend school but were previously enrolled on paper.
17 out of 23 districts in Punjab have seen a dip in primary enrolment in government schools from 2024-25 to 2025-26.
DEOs have been asked to prepare a list of head teachers and colleagues in the worst-performing schools for further action.
Six districts have seen an increase in primary enrolment: Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Fatehgarh Sahib.
The government is investigating the reasons behind the decline, including the removal of ghost students from enrolment records.
Teachers in worst-performing schools have been asked to explain the drop in enrolment.
