Qatar Seeks Tehran Dialogue as US Escalates Economic Pressure

Qatar’s prime minister traveled to Iran to help restart talks between Iran and the United States.

Fighting has mostly stopped since a June ceasefire, but the two countries still disagree.

One major disagreement is about the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for ships carrying oil.

Qatar suggested that Iran and Oman temporarily share a shipping route and work together to remove mines.

Iran says the United States must reduce pressure, lift sanctions and rebuild trust.

The United States says Iran has not returned to negotiations in a meaningful way.

Iran says it has never left the negotiating table and describes the new sanctions as an economic war.

Iran and Oman may share the strait and its revenues, but the details have not been settled.
