TMC Seeks Centre's Help for Jute Market Stabilization
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has asked the central government for help to stabilize the raw jute market.
They say there is a big problem because the price of raw jute has doubled, which is causing mills to close and workers to lose jobs.
The TMC blames this on bad policies over the years.
They want the government to create a system to keep prices stable, buy more jute at a fair price, and make sure there is enough demand for jute products.
If nothing is done, they warn that the jute industry, which supports many farmers and workers, could be badly hurt.
Raw jute prices have surged to Rs 12,000 per quintal, more than double the MSP of Rs 5,650.
The crisis is causing mills to cut production and workers to lose jobs in West Bengal.
TMC blames policy shortcomings, including lack of a buffer mechanism and irregular demand planning.
MSP procurement in 2023-24 did not prevent the current scarcity and price volatility.
TMC urges the government to announce a jute stabilization framework and ensure predictable demand.
