Telangana Pushes for 21 as Minimum Age to Contest Elections
Telangana's Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, wants to lower the minimum age to contest elections from 25 to 21 years.
He believes this will give young people, especially Gen Z, a bigger say in politics.
The state government plans to hold a special assembly session in August to pass a resolution urging the central government to make this change.
Reddy points out that 21-year-olds can already become IAS officers and contest local elections, so they should be able to run for higher offices like MLA and MP.
He also mentioned that countries like Germany, the UK, and Singapore allow younger people to hold high political offices.
Reddy praised the recent protests by Gen Z over the NEET exam controversy, which led to the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
He also demanded that cases against protesting students be withdrawn and compensation be given to affected families.
