Indore Water Tragedy: 23 Deaths, Governance Failure
In Indore, a city in Madhya Pradesh, India, there was a big problem with the water.
The water got dirty and made people sick, leading to 23 deaths.
The government and the city officials went to court and said that 15 people died because of the dirty water.
They decided to give money to the families of all 23 people who died around the same time, even if it's not sure that the dirty water caused their deaths.
The city is also fixing the pipes that bring the water to make sure this doesn't happen again.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) said this was a serious mistake by the government because they didn't act quickly or tell people the truth.
They also said this isn't just a problem in Indore but in other cities too.
The NGT is sending a team to check the situation and give advice.
The Mayor even drank tap water to show that it is safe now.
He asked people to boil their drinking water as a precaution.
The Indore Municipal Corporation is repairing the underground Narmada and tubewell pipeline network in the affected Bhagirathpura area.
The Madhya Pradesh government recognized 23 deaths for compensation, including 15 directly attributed to water contamination.
The state government decided to compensate all deaths that occurred around the time of the contamination, regardless of direct attribution.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) termed the water contamination a 'serious governance failure' and constituted a fact-finding team to assess the situation.
The NGT also issued guidelines for providing safe drinking water, including a proposal for a 'Water App' to lodge complaints about water quality.
