N Chandrasekaran resigns as Tata Sons chairman ahead of AGM

Tata Sons is a very big company, and N Chandrasekaran was its chairman — the person in charge.

He has told the company he is stepping down, but he will finish his current term.

Another family, called the Mistry family, owns part of Tata Sons through their business group, SP Group.

SP Group owes a lot of money — about ₹60,000 crore — and wants to sell part of its Tata Sons shares to help pay it off.

SP Group and Tata Sons talked about ways to do this, including swapping shares, but they could not agree on how much the shares were worth.

SP Group already borrowed about ₹21,500 crore, using its Tata Sons shares as a promise to pay back.

Because of that loan, within 18 months SP Group must get Tata Sons to announce a plan to sell its shares to the public, or agree on a deal for the stake.

Chandrasekaran leaving makes all of this harder to sort out because he was a key leader for almost ten years.
