AI securities lawsuits drive three-quarters of investor losses in 2026

Some companies tell investors that their products are super smart because they use artificial intelligence, or AI.

When companies say this, their stock price sometimes goes up and they become worth more money.

But sometimes the companies say things that are not quite true.

For example, a product might be advertised as AI-powered even though people do most of the work.

Investors who believed the hype can lose money when the truth comes out and the price drops.

In the first half of 2026, only about 13 out of every 100 of these lawsuits involved AI, but they caused almost three-quarters of all the money investors said they lost.

Fifteen of these AI lawsuits were filed in just six months, almost as many as in all of last year.

Big companies like Meta and Alphabet are spending billions of dollars on AI, and some investors worry they will not get that money back.

In late July, more than $1.3 trillion of value disappeared from big semiconductor companies in just a few days.

Now companies have to be more careful about what they say about their AI because they might have to prove it in court.
