PWD Targets Monsoon 2026 for New Balason Bridge, Siliguri-Mirik Link
Imagine a road connecting two towns, Siliguri and Mirik, had a bridge that got washed away by a big rain.
So, workers quickly built a temporary bridge using pipes and rocks, but it's not very strong and might get flooded.
They are now building a much stronger, permanent bridge that should be ready by the next big rainy season, which is about two years away.
This new bridge will be wider and safer, so people and tourists can travel between the towns without worry, even when it rains a lot.
Building the permanent bridge is tricky because of hard rocks in the river, so they might need to use controlled blasts to make space for its strong supports.
PWD aims for Monsoon 2026 completion of a permanent bridge over the Balason river linking Siliguri and Mirik.
A temporary hume pipe bridge was built in 21 days after the original Dudhia bridge was washed away in early October.
The temporary bridge has a limited lifespan and has faced disruptions due to rising water levels during heavy rain.
The permanent bridge is estimated to cost ₹54 crore, while the temporary bridge cost over ₹1 crore.
Construction of the permanent bridge has faced delays due to hard rocks in the riverbed, potentially requiring controlled blasting for foundation work.
