Tennessee Prison Chief Resigns After Failed Christa Pike Execution
Tennessee tried to execute Christa Pike with an injection, but she survived and became very ill.
Witnesses said she was heard choking or struggling after the first dose, and a second dose also did not kill her.
Her lawyers said she was unconscious and needed a machine to help her breathe.
They also said doctors were working to treat her and clear the drug from her body.
Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent review of what happened.
He also said prison chief Frank Strada would leave his job this month.
Strada said he believed staff followed the rules, but that stepping aside was best while the review takes place.
Lee halted executions in Tennessee for the rest of 2026.
Governor Bill Lee announced Saturday that Correction Commissioner Frank Strada will leave his position this month.
Strada said he believes department personnel followed established protocol but that stepping aside is in Tennesseans’ best interests during the independent review.
Christa Pike survived a lethal-injection attempt on Wednesday after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital.
Pike’s lawyers said she was unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator in hospital, where medical staff were working to save her life.
Lee ordered an independent review and halted executions for the rest of 2026; reports described Pike’s attempt as the state’s second failed execution this year.
