IITs See Surge in Student Counselling Amid Mental Health Concerns
Imagine that lots of smart college students are feeling stressed or down.
After the pandemic, more students at top schools like IITs are going to counselors for help.
The number of students seeking help has increased dramatically at some schools.
Some of it is because of the tough times during the pandemic, and some is because it's becoming more normal to talk about feelings and mental health.
However, at a couple of schools, fewer students are using counseling services.
Schools are now offering more support, like more counselors and new programs.
Counselling services at several IITs have seen a rise in usage post-pandemic.
IIT-Kanpur saw counseling sessions more than double from 2018 to 2024.
Student footfall at IIT-Delhi has increased over fourfold since 2020.
Officials attribute the increase to pandemic after-effects and reduced stigma.
IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Guwahati showed a decrease or limited growth in counseling usage.
