Japan Joins NATO Security Initiative for Ukraine
Japan is joining a group of countries, led by NATO, to promise protection for Ukraine so Russia won't attack again.
This plan was discussed after a meeting where President Trump, the Ukrainian leader, and European countries talked about peace.
Japan had already agreed to help Ukraine with money and other aid in June 2024.
Now, Japan will discuss what specific actions it can take.
The goal is to help Ukraine stay safe and to find a lasting peace.
Japan will participate in a NATO-led initiative to provide security guarantees for Ukraine.
This announcement follows a meeting between President Trump, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, and European leaders.
A coalition of 30 countries, including Japan and Australia, is developing a plan for these guarantees.
Japan signed a security agreement with Ukraine in June 2024, the first non-NATO nation to do so.
