Madras High Court Rejects Appearance-Based Caste Test

Madras High Court Rejects Appearance-Based Caste Test

M Ravikumar has a certificate saying he belongs to a Scheduled Caste community.

Officials later questioned whether he and his family had genuinely returned from Christianity to Hinduism.

They used some details about the family’s appearance and languages when examining the claim.

The Madras High Court said those details may not help decide someone’s caste.

The court also found that some other conclusions were not supported by evidence.

Ravikumar says he and his father became Hindu again in 1983.

Officials pointed to his father’s Christian burial and other records as reasons for doubt.

The court did not make the final decision about Ravikumar’s certificate.

Instead, it ordered the committee to hear him again and reconsider the case.
