Why Secure Communications Are Becoming Central to Modern Warfare
Modern armies need more than powerful weapons to succeed.
They also need reliable ways for people and machines to share information.
This is difficult when soldiers are surrounded by loud engines, wind, rotor noise or gunfire.
It is also difficult when enemies try to disrupt electronic systems.
The Indian Army plans to focus on networking and data in 2026.
In helicopters, crew members may need to move around or leave the aircraft while staying connected.
Klaus Frühwirth of Axnes said communication should be easy enough that users can talk without thinking about the system.
New systems are linking radios and communication networks across many kinds of military vehicles and weapons.
Modern weapons are only as effective as the information reaching their operators and the speed of communication between them.
The Indian Army has designated 2026 as its “Year of Networking and Data Centricity.”
Military personnel must communicate clearly despite rotor noise, wind, engines, weapons fire and hostile electronic environments.
Klaus Frühwirth of Axnes said communication systems must be simple, intuitive and reliable in demanding conditions.
Integrated systems are connecting multiple radios and communication loops across helicopters, tanks, armoured vehicles and artillery systems.
- Who
- The Indian Army, military personnel, and Klaus Frühwirth, Chief Commercial Officer of Axnes, are central to the report.
- What
- Military communications are becoming a core battlefield capability as armed forces connect sensors, decision-makers, weapons and personnel.
- When
- The Indian Army has identified 2026 as its “Year of Networking and Data Centricity.”
- Where
- The communications challenge applies across helicopters, tanks, armoured vehicles and artillery systems, including noisy and electronically hostile battlefield environments.
- Why
- Reliable communication helps operators receive information and coordinate while working amid noise, movement and electronic threats.
- Indian Army initiative
- 2026 has been designated the “Year of Networking and Data Centricity.”
- Key communications challenge
- Personnel must hear and speak clearly amid rotor noise, wind, engines and weapons fire.
- Electronic environment
- Military networks must function in hostile electronic environments.
- Helicopter operations
- Personnel may move around a helicopter or be lowered by hoist while remaining connected.
- Industry voice
- Klaus Frühwirth is Axnes’ Chief Commercial Officer and has more than two decades of aerospace and defence industry experience.
- System integration
- Communications networks are increasingly connecting multiple radios and communication loops.
