India's Gold Imports Surge, Pushing Trade Deficit to Record High
India bought a lot more gold in October, almost three times as much as last year, which helped push the country's trade gap to a new high.
This happened because people were buying gold for festivals and weddings, and gold prices were higher.
At the same time, India sold fewer things to other countries.
Some of this was because of new taxes in the United States and general worries about the world economy.
Many types of goods India usually exports, like clothes and machinery parts, saw their sales drop.
However, India did sell more electronics, and sales to China actually went up.
Even though more money came in from selling services, the increase in buying gold made the overall trade deficit much bigger.
India's merchandise trade deficit reached a record $41.68 billion in October.
Gold imports surged nearly threefold to $14.72 billion due to festive season demand and higher prices.
Exports declined by 11.8% year-on-year to $34.38 billion, impacted by US tariffs and global trade uncertainty.
Multiple export sectors, including engineering goods, textiles, and gems and jewellery, saw significant declines.
Exports to most markets decreased, except for China, while imports from Switzerland, China, and the US increased.

Concerns Over Trade Deficit and Export Performance
India's merchandise trade deficit reached a record $41.68 billion in October, primarily due to an 11.8% year-on-year fall in exports. Multiple key export sectors, including engineering goods, textiles, and gems and jewellery, experienced significant declines.
Factors Driving Import Surge and Export Market Shifts
While exports fell, the sharp increase in gold and silver imports was the main driver of the deficit. The festive season and higher prices contributed to a substantial rise in gold imports. Exports to most markets declined, with the exception of China, which saw significant growth.
Impact of Tariffs and Global Factors on Exports
Concerns Over Trade Deficit and Export Performance
Merchandise exports were negatively impacted by US trade tariffs and general trade uncertainty, leading to declines in major export categories. Shipments to key markets like the US, UAE, UK, and Germany also saw decreases.
Factors Driving Import Surge and Export Market Shifts
Despite the overall export decline, electronic goods exports showed robust growth. The significant growth in exports to China suggests a diversification of export markets for some Indian products, mitigating some of the negative impacts from other regions.
Drivers of Import Growth
Concerns Over Trade Deficit and Export Performance
Imports surged by 16.63% to $76.06 billion, largely driven by gold imports nearly tripling to $14.72 billion and silver imports rising significantly. Shipments from Switzerland saw exceptional growth, predominantly due to gold imports.
Factors Driving Import Surge and Export Market Shifts
While gold and silver imports significantly boosted overall imports, other countries like China, UAE, and the US also saw increased import shipments. Imports from Russia, however, fell due to reduced crude oil imports.
