EC Directs West Bengal to Reform Election Department
The Election Commission (EC) is making changes to how elections are run in West Bengal.
They want the office in charge of elections to be independent from the state government's home department.
The EC believes the current system doesn't give the election officials enough control over money and decisions.
The EC wants a new, separate department with its own budget for elections.
They are also giving the election officials more financial power and want to fill empty positions to prepare for upcoming elections.
This is to make sure elections are fair and run smoothly.
The Election Commission (EC) directed the West Bengal government to separate the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office from the home department.
The EC cited a lack of financial and administrative autonomy for the CEO in the current structure.
A new election department with a dedicated budget head and full financial autonomy is mandated.
The EC ordered the delegation of financial powers to the CEO, on par with other department heads.
The state government is required to fill four vacant posts in the CEO's office in consultation with the EC.
